Competency Based Curriculum

Competency Based Curriculum is a new way of learning where the new system caters for all the needs of the learners in the education curriculum.

Mission

·        To identify the potential of the learners.

·        Nurture the potential.

·        All learners to be successful in their learning.

Vision.

The Competency Based Curriculum’s vision is to ensure that all the learners are engaged, empowered and that they become ethical citizens.

When we look at some of the changes in CBC, it is quite different from the traditional knowledge education. The transition is from less to more exposure to the learner’s benefit.

Traditional knowledge.

CBC tries to shift in the traditional knowledge which is mainly:

·        Content focus.

·        Rigid and prescriptive curriculum with limited flexibility.

·        Focus on summative assessment and competition ( High staked examinations)

·        Emphasis on schooling.

·        Teaching.

Competency Based Curriculum  is the best curriculum that  is learner cantered. It mainly:

·        Focuses on the Competency.

·        Flexible with opportunities for specialisation-pathway.

·        Balance between formative and summative assessment and excellence.

·        Emphasis on education.

·        Learning.

There are three pillars of CBC

·        Values.

·        Guiding principles

·        Theoretical Approaches.

Values can be integrated in the curriculum. Values like love, responsibility, respect, unity, peace, patriotism, social justice and integrity can be infused with the selection of the learning environment and allow learning experiences.

Guidance an counselling programmes can also be infused in learning so that the learners can have a safe environment where they are learning and at the same time their needs are as well met.
